About SWAYAM Plus Government of India launched the ‘Digital India’ programme with the vision to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy by ensuring digital access, digital inclusion, digital empowerment and bridging the digital divide. To realize the vision of Digital India, and to achieve these objectives, Ministry of Education officially launched SWAYAM Platform in July 2017. SWAYAM is the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform providing educational opportunities for a vast number of learners. It aims to bring the best teaching and learning resources to everyone, especially those who are yet to benefit from the digital revolution and access the knowledge economy. SWAYAM has the largest enrolment base and is amongst the most popular e-learning platforms today. The enrolment data over the years from 2017 to 2023 has shown significant increase. The total enrolment in 2017 was approx. 31 Lacs which gradually increased to more than 72 lacs by the end of 2023. These figures indicate a general trend of increasing enrolment over the years, with the most significant numbers recorded in the latter part of the period under consideration. In 2020, Government of India announced National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), making way for large scale, transformational reforms in higher education sectors. The NEP 2020 recognizes the critical need for reskilling and upskilling in the rapidly changing landscape of the 21st century. With technology driving transformation across industries and job markets becoming increasingly competitive, the policy emphasizes the importance of equipping individuals with relevant and future-ready skills. Reskilling and upskilling initiatives play a pivotal role in addressing skill gaps, ensuring employability, and fostering a culture of lifelong learning. Through collaborative efforts between academia, industry, and the government, the policy endeavors to create a workforce that is well-prepared for the challenges of the modern world and can thrive in diverse sectors, driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive development. The establishment of SWAYAM Plus would potentially enhance the employability of both college students and lifelong learners. The Industry- academia partnership would bring together the academic rigor of SWAYAM's educational platform with the real-world expertise and relevance offered by industry partners. This exposure would equip students with not only theoretical knowledge but also the skills, practices, and latest trends demanded by the job market. It would bridge the gap between academia and industry, making college graduates more job-ready and competitive. Additionally, for lifelong learners, this partnership could offer a unique opportunity to upskill or reskill in response to evolving industry needs. Such a collaboration with industry partners could ensures that the courses provided are aligned with the ever-changing demands of the workforce SWAYAM Plus will have programmes in chosen sectors, namely- Manufacturing, Energy, Computer Science & Engineering/IT/ITES, Management Studies, Teacher Education, Healthcare, Hospitality & Tourism, Social Science, Indian Knowledge Systems, Media, Communication, etc. SWAYAM Plus will primarily focus on achieving the following:
Building an ecosystem for all stakeholders in professional and career development, including learners, course providers, industry, academia, and strategic partners.
High‐quality learning and certification programs from the best industry and academia at affordable costs.
Employment‐focused programs imparting future skills in chosen domains
